a poem for p

I had a feeling you’d be here
along the crisp morning air
birds chirping with the whistles you taught my cousin to make
always was your presence even in absence

the days are getting colder
the wind pushing me on
the golden sky splits in the clouds
iridescent rays of sun peaking through
adding some light to the darkness
in the pit that was left
when he welcomed you

everyone said they didn’t expect it
“I thought we had at least a little more time”
I had a feeling however,
some chasm growing in my gut
I knew that our conversation was most likely our last
I reached over you on your bed
wrapped in your Lions blanket
the hug was gentle but fleeting
when I said “I love you”
oh, I meant it
felt it
like the words engraved in my skin
